Beyond The Exam Room: Volume 10

Light Is a Nutrient (and you are Malnourished)

You track your calories. You track your macros. You track your steps.

But you are completely ignoring the most important input your body receives every 24 hours:

Light.

We tend to think of light as something that allows us to see.

But biologically, light is a drug. It is a nutrient.

It is the primary signal that tells your hormones what to do and when to do it.

When you step outside within 30 minutes of waking, the full spectrum solar radiation hits the receptors in your eyes (ipRGCs).

This sends a direct signal to your brain (the suprachiasmatic nucleus) to release a pulse of cortisol.

This is good cortisol. It wakes you up. It turns the engine on.

It also sets a timer for 12-14 hours later to release melatonin (sleep hormone).

But here is what the modern high-performer does:

They wake up in a dark room. They scroll on a phone (blue light/junk light). They drink coffee to force the energy. They sit under fluorescent office lights all day.

Then, at night, they blast their eyes with bright screens.

The signal is inverted.

The body thinks morning is night and night is morning.

The result is a "tired and wired" state. You are exhausted at 3pm but awake at 11pm.

You can take all the Vitamin D pills you want. You can take all the melatonin supplements you want.

You cannot out-supplement a broken light environment.

You are starving for natural light and overdosing on artificial light.

The protocol is simple, but non-negotiable:

View the sky (not through a window) within 30 minutes of waking.

Signal the engine to start.

Anchoring your circadian rhythm is the highest ROI habit for energy. And it’s free.

Stop ignoring the signal.

If you are ready to fix the rest of your metabolic inputs, the Elite Reset waitlist is open.
